Millinocket Maine

Millinocket was first settled in the 1830's by Thomas Fowler. Millinocket is Abenaki for "this place is admirable." Millinocket began as a mill town to serve the needs of the Great Northern Paper Company, one of the leading paper manufactureres in the US.

Famous New Hampshire writer and naturalist Henry David Thoreau visited this region of Maine in 1846 during an excursion into the Maine wilderness. His writes about the region in his book "The Maine Woods".

Millinocket is famous for hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. The region is the gateway to Baxter State Park and majestic Mt. Katahdin.

Millinocket is a healthy center of commerce and production sitting comfortably on the west branch of the Penobscot River. Millinocket is one of the last major stop-overs to be found before entering the wilder northern reaches of natural Maine
